Huh? You auditioned, you were cast, and you know nothing about the show? Didn't they tell you anything about it? I believe there was a description of the storyline and character breakdown in the announcement. It's an (almost) new production written by a local playright. I believe it's been staged twice. Once in Acworth an again in Marietta. Hit the Productions tab above and you'll see some reviews.

Haha, no they told us about it and I know the general story I just wanted some people's opinions who have seen it or heard about it, but thanks I'll go look at the reviews, I didn't even think of doing that haha!

I saw it when they did it in Acworth at Theatre on Main. It's a clever show, some good laughs and songs. I do hope they get some of the original cast back. A couple of performances really made the show, mainly the secretary and the principal.

Alliance Celebrates 40th Birthday
By Dedalus |
Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre has been going strong for forty years now, and last month, they threw themselves a birthday party. Three former Artistic Directors (and current chief Susan Booth) talked about their legacies and about their ambitions for the future. The evening was capped with a slate of performances designed to give a “sneak peek” into the new 2008/2009 season.
Rather than focusing on the pleasant (and sometimes inspiring) speeches given by Fred Chappell (Artistic Director 1976-1985), Robert J. Farley (1987-1990), and Kenny Leon (1990-2001), I’d like to talk about the new season and the nibbles we were given to whet our appetites (and believe me, mine is whetted). If this comes across like a simple PR piece for the Alliance, forgive me, but their “previews” did put their best foot forward.
First up was this year’s Kandeda Award winner, Julia Brownell’s comedy “Smart Cookie.” The first thing that stands out here is that this year’s winner is a Comedy. The past four years’ winners were poetic, inspiring, suspenseful, nerve-wracking – all well-written, but all Dramas. Our preview showed us Tess Kincaid and Courtenay Collins brunching and dishing. The dialog was fresh and funny, the characters sharp, and the scene over far too quickly. Look for this one to hit the Hertz stage next January.
Next up, rather than giving us scenes from the August Wilson Repertory opening the season (“Gem of the Ocean” and “Radio Gulf”), we were treated to two pieces from other Wilson plays performed by young actors who had won a monologue competition. William Combs did a monologue from “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” showing himself to be an actor of range and power. But it was young Joaquina Kalukango’s seering screed from “King Hedley II” that dominated. This was a performance borne in anger and in tragedy that shot a bolt right to the gut. We WILL be seeing more of this fine actress (or at least I hope we will). Let it be said, I am an August Wilson fan, and I liked the script of “Radio Gulf” (it will be surprisingly timely this election season). I haven’t read “Gem of the Ocean,” yet, but I hope to before August. Since we opening night ushers will be seeing both plays on the same day, I look forward to an embarrassment of richness.
To lighten the mood, we next saw Second City’ers Brendan Dowling and Beth Melewski doing a short sketch in which a certain unnamed (female) presidential candidate is trying to hire an assassin for a minor little clean-up service. I don’t know if this sketch will find its way into “The Second City: Too Busy to Hate … Too Hard to Commute” in September, but if it’s an indication of the quality of the show, be prepared to laugh. As a matter of curiosity, is it usual for paid assassins to turn down a job because they love the victim (“in a totally non-gay way, sort of”)?
Next, Courtenay Collins and Larry Larson did a scene from “Managing Maxine,” by Alliance favorite Janece Shaffer. I was disappointed a bit by her last offering (“Bluish”), but this scene was promising. It depicted a husband and wife worrying about the wife’s mother finding autumn romance. Maybe the scene was a bit fuzzy, maybe to humor a bit restrained, but it was amusing enough (with the actors doing their usual wonderful job), that this production does hold promise. It’ll be on the main stage in October.
“Goodnight Moon” will be the first Children’s Play offering (Hertz Stage in November), and Terry Burrell sang us a nice and haunting lullaby from it. I know nothing of this children’s book, though my daughter does, and is looking forward to seeing this one.
Next, Chris Kayser revived his Scrooge Schtick for the annual “Christmas Carol” mounting. He was joined (eventually) by a bevy of CC veterans to sing a tech-impaired “Happy Birthday,” that was energetically presented and warmly received.
One of my favorite actresses in Atlanta, Bethany Anne Lind, came out next to do the opening monologue from “26 Miles” by Tony nominee Quiara Alegría Hudes (“Elliott: A Soldiers Fugue,” “In the Heights”). She played a super-smart 15-year-old faced with a road trip with her estranged mother. Based on this monologue, the show promises to be smart and focused. But, we’ll have to wait until next March (and just hope Ms. Lind gets the final casting nod).
Next, Neal Ghant gave a spirited, hip-hop song from “Class of 3000 Live.” This isn’t exactly “my cup of tea,” but I’ll gave anything a chance. Mr. Ghant (almost) sold to for me. This will hit the main stage next March.
Finally, the highlight of the evening was Chandra Currelley doing an bluesy and gut-ripping “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” from the Gospel “Jesus Christ Superstar.” Although I cannot claim to be a Gospel fan, if the rest of the show is as good as this number (and the concept does seem to be a nice fit), this will be a production that’ll be long remembered.
Ms. Booth did tease us a bit as to what will be replacing the postponed Stephen King / John Mellencamp musical, apparently negotiations are underway and even hints could not be dropped. For the time being, let’s just say we anticipate the April premiere of that classic favorite “To Be Announced.”
The Alliance Theatre has dominated the Atlanta Theatre scene in the sense that it has the biggest budget and the widest National acclaim. Many of its productions have knocked my socks off, while others have been bold attempts that barely missed. It’s had its flops, but even they have been well-produced and professionally mounted (whatever that means).
These previews have made me anticipate the new season, and made me glad to be part of the Alliance’s “Opening Night” Usher corps (and I do so like to “tux up” for the occasions). So, Happy Birthday, Alliance, and I wish you many, many more.
